Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire and today its temples, market streets, aqueducts and royal enclosures are scattered across 26 sq km of granite boulders and banana plantations. Sunrise from Matanga Hill and sunset over the Tungabhadra are the classic bookends to a day of cycling between monuments.
